{"id":847,"date":"2010-11-24T17:10:28","date_gmt":"2010-11-24T22:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/blog\/?p=847"},"modified":"2010-11-24T17:10:28","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T22:10:28","slug":"in-defense-of-the-intj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/2010\/11\/24\/in-defense-of-the-intj\/","title":{"rendered":"In defense of the INTJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those of you familiar with Meyers-Briggs  personality typing, when you hear INTJ, you think &#8220;emotionless, misanthropic  perfectionist with no social skills\u00a0who is <em>really<\/em> good at math or  science research.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a pretty shallow misunderstanding of the  type.<\/p>\n<p>It is true that the INTJ\u00a0does not suffer fools gladly, genuinely is  an introvert, so needs that alone time to recharge, is an intuitive thinker who  gathers knowledge systems, and is <em>highly<\/em> unlikely to be the life of the  party.\u00a0 But we <em>are <\/em>human. (In fact, it is invariable that every INTJ I  know has a <em>terrible<\/em> temper, though usually strongly  leashed).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the knowledge systems part that people get wrong.\u00a0 I was  talking about the whole Meyers Briggs thing to someone once.\u00a0 I have a job  opening\u00a0a gym a couple of mornings a week.\u00a0 I&#8217;m there at five in the morning,  and it&#8217;s my job to check people into the gym, sign people up for memberships,  generally helping them and doing my best to help them have a pleasant experience  so that they&#8217;ll keep on coming back.\u00a0 I&#8217;m cheerful.\u00a0 I make a note of personal  details as best I can.\u00a0 I do my best to remember names.\u00a0 I pay attention and am  helpful.\u00a0 I try to be playful and fun.\u00a0 And I chat with members&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I  mentioned being an INTJ.\u00a0 After the protest of &#8220;<em>You&#8217;re<\/em> not an  introvert!&#8221;* we were able to have an actual discussion about the perception of  the INTJ v. a very serious reality of the type.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone would agree an  INTJ is <em>very good <\/em>at learning necessary skills.\u00a0 In fact, I doubt there  is any type in existence more notorious for it.\u00a0 So, social skills?\u00a0 They&#8217;re  <em>skills<\/em>.\u00a0 You can <em>learn them<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of us do gravitate to  professions in which social skills are not a big deal, so we don&#8217;t develop  them.\u00a0 But not all of us do.\u00a0 Do you think Thomas Jefferson, that quintessential  INTJ, had the political career he had with lousy social skills?\u00a0 Oh, I doubt he  was any Bill Clinton, but friends, you <em>can&#8217;t<\/em> become politically  powerful without social skills. It&#8217;s a flat-out impossibility. You <em>have<\/em> to be able to create a cadre of people who trust you and are allied with you,  people who trust your leadership.<\/p>\n<p>So, look at your INTJ.\u00a0\u00a0Now back to  me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Between the gym job and the fact I am a teacher means that to be  effective at my <em>jobs, <\/em>cheerfulness, amiability, and the ability to help  people feel happy and engaged are necessary skills.\u00a0 I have to be able to spot a  confused face, an embarrassed face, excited body language and so on. Otherwise,  I could NOT DO MY JOB.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s core to an INTJ?\u00a0 Learning the skills  necessary to accomplish the goal.<\/p>\n<p>Social skills count.\u00a0 They really do.\u00a0  That means we can and will smile and be amiable when the situation calls for  it.\u00a0 (Though after a whole day of it, yes, an isolation chamber starts looking  attractive).<\/p>\n<p>Stop selling us  short!<\/p>\n<p>_______________________________<br \/>\n*If someone only knows me  <em>professionally<\/em>, I can almost count on that comment if a discussion of  type comes up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For those of you familiar with Meyers-Briggs personality typing, when you hear INTJ, you think &#8220;emotionless, misanthropic perfectionist with no social skills\u00a0who is really good at math or science research.&#8221; It&#8217;s a pretty shallow misunderstanding of the type.
