{"id":753,"date":"2010-06-23T10:31:23","date_gmt":"2010-06-23T14:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/blog\/?p=753"},"modified":"2010-06-23T10:31:23","modified_gmt":"2010-06-23T14:31:23","slug":"being-a-grownup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/2010\/06\/23\/being-a-grownup\/","title":{"rendered":"Being a Grownup\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was reading a blog post called <a href=\"http:\/\/hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/this-is-why-ill-never-be-adult.html\">Why I\u2019ll Never Be an Adult<\/a>.\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing the author is somewhere in her late twenties\/early thirties.\u00a0 She speaks of physics classes, so she\u2019s neither stupid nor incapable of thinking structurally.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s funny, because we all seem to have this idea that being a Grownup\u2122 means perfect self-discipline, and if you don\u2019t have it, you\u2019re not a Grownup\u2122. This particular blogger will try to be a Grownup\u2122 \u00a0by doing lots of housework, cooking perfect meals, and scheduling her life to hell and back.\u00a0 She\u2019ll also find herself failing miserably because she\u2019s set the bar too high.\u00a0 She\u2019s trying to be more and more \u201cperfect\u201d in managing her life.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that I don\u2019t get how it happens. I do and mostly because I <em>do<\/em> that.<\/p>\n<p>It also has zip to do with being a grown-up.<\/p>\n<p>I think we\u2019re looking through out tween to teen goggles when we assess being a Grownup\u2122. We see being a Grownup\u2122 as being frenetically active and working <em>all the time<\/em>, never <em>ever<\/em> being slow, or late, or forgetful or\u2026<\/p>\n<p>You know, I\u2019m older than one of my grandmothers was when I was born<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 When my mother was my age, she had a married child.\u00a0 I think that gets to count in terms of age.\u00a0\u00a0 In terms of where my life is and how I live daily?\u00a0 My life isn\u2019t really like either of theirs.\u00a0\u00a0 I made some radically different choices. Does that make me not a Grownup\u2122?<\/p>\n<p>Part of it might also be that we\u2019re forgetting the help <em>we<\/em> were to our parents.\u00a0 Keeping the house neat is easier when you have the husky teenager doing some of the work.\u00a0\u00a0 Do they do it as well as you want it done?\u00a0 Almost certainly not.\u00a0 I know for a fact I didn\u2019t with my mom.\u00a0 But the laundry still got folded, she did not clean every bathroom in the house, and Dad certainly wasn\u2019t wrangling all the wood to heat the house by himself<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0Why? \u00a0That\u2019s more work than one person can <em>do<\/em>!<a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we try to do it <em>all<\/em> ourselves, we\u2019re actually setting the bar higher than our parents did for themselves.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you\u2019re not feeling like a Grownup\u2122 because you can\u2019t get it all done to white glove perfection all by your lonesome, cut yourself some slack.\u00a0 Grownups\u2122 have historically gotten help.<\/p>\n<p>And if you have a kid, go make \u2018em do a chore J<\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> Good lord, I actually have conscious memories of Nanny at my age.\u00a0 Scary.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> In fact, my brother and I have had a bit of a chuckle at the fact that they got a gas furnace after he and I moved out of town.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> And while I don\u2019t know this for certain, I\u2019m willing to bet that in my grandmother\u2019s case, her home was neater when she had three girls at home v. when they moved out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was reading a blog post called Why I\u2019ll Never Be an Adult.\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing the author is somewhere in her late twenties\/early thirties.\u00a0 She speaks of physics classes, so she\u2019s neither stupid nor incapable of thinking structurally.
