I like my netbook a lot, and really wasn\u2019t getting all that excited about the iPad.\u00a0 I had a bit of a lightbulb moment when I realized that I wasn\u2019t that excited because if I want an ultraportable wireless device, I want something that\u2019s good for content creation, not something that\u2019s only good for content consumption.<\/p>\n
Now, Stephen Fry wrote a glowing piece on the iPad, admitting he was an Apple fanboy and all that smack.<\/p>\n
I was surprised that he was that excited about the thing, to be frank with you.\u00a0 The man\u2019s an actor, a writer and what have you. He creates a lot<\/em> more content than I do, just sayin\u2019,\u00a0 \u2018Course, he also makes a lot more money than I do, so dropping $600 on something to view content probably doesn\u2019t seem as absurd as it would for me[1]<\/a>.\u00a0 If I made as much money as Mr. Fry, possibly I\u2019d own an iPad right now.<\/p>\n But I doubt it.\u00a0 Even the fact that you can read books on it wouldn\u2019t quite be enough for me. Certainly, I\u2019d own it over a Kindle.\u00a0\u00a0 Do I read Kindle-enabled books?\u00a0 Yep, all the time.\u00a0 I read \u2018em on the PC software on my netbook.\u00a0 Call me the Alton Brown of technology, but I\u2019m not a big fan of a single-task device unless it\u2019s really cheap or so astoundingly good at doing something I find necessary that I\u2019m willing to own a single-task device.\u00a0 I mean, even my MP3 player[2]<\/a> doubles as my alarm clock!<\/p>\n I do think there\u2019s a strong possibility that the demand for something cool for content consumption will kill off the demand for a small cheap computer, though.\u00a0 And that rather depresses me, as the netbook was the computer I\u2019d been waiting<\/a> for since I was in my teens.<\/p>\n
[1]<\/a> Since dropping $600 solely to view content does<\/em> seem absurd to me, I suppose that it\u2019s obvious I still own a television that\u2019s a CRT, too.<\/p>\n
