{"id":714,"date":"2010-04-10T10:32:26","date_gmt":"2010-04-10T14:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/blog\/?p=714"},"modified":"2010-04-10T10:32:26","modified_gmt":"2010-04-10T14:32:26","slug":"learning-to-sew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/2010\/04\/10\/learning-to-sew\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning to Sew"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sewing is on my mind, what with doing a lot of it right now and all.<\/p>\n<p>My mother taught me how to sew.\u00a0 She sews quite well, but doesn\u2019t do it often.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think she\u2019s been much into it since she was out of her twenties.\u00a0 But she did break down and make a prom dress for me for my senior prom.<\/p>\n<p>I had lost my taste for ruffly, frilly numbers or metallic shades of bright pink and blue at a time when they were <em>really<\/em> fashionable.\u00a0\u00a0 I saw a pattern for this long, slinky Grecian-inspired dress that I just <em>had<\/em> to have for a prom dress (in black.\u00a0 I had started a serious black phase), so Mom agreed to make it for me.<\/p>\n<p>It was <em>sooo<\/em> cool.\u00a0 Looking back, it was a fairly difficult dress to make, though the pattern itself wasn\u2019t too appalling.\u00a0 It was the fabric.\u00a0 The fabric was a slinky knit that is the very devil to sew, especially if you don\u2019t have a serger \u2013 which few but the most fanatic of home sewers\/quasi-professionals did in the spring of 1987. \u00a0\u00a0Mom didn\u2019t have a serger.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know at the time about this, and Mom has never mentioned it.\u00a0 It\u2019s only knowing what I do now that I can reconstruct this.<\/p>\n<p>What I remember was how awesome it was to have something totally unique to my own tastes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/doctorwhobaltimore.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-713\" style=\"margin: 5px; border: 3px solid black;\" title=\"doctorwhobaltimore\" src=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/doctorwhobaltimore-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"At a Doctor Who convention in the early 1990s with Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a>Ironically, one of the first things I made for myself some five or six years later <em>was<\/em> pink \u2013 a jumper.\u00a0 Mom talked me through it, held my hand through the sewing process, and doing some of the hard parts.\u00a0 Yes, there were parts that were difficult and confusing for me when I was learning to sew! \u00a0It was this wonderful soft corduroy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The skirt was supposed to be gathered, but we pleated it instead.\u00a0 I forget why, but I\u2019m pretty sure it was a screw-up on me not following directions properly or something.\u00a0 The mistake turned out okay, though.<\/p>\n<p>I wore that jumper out, and kind of miss it.\u00a0 Too bad they aren\u2019t too fashionable right now.\u00a0 \u00a0Maybe I\u2019ll make another one anyway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sewing is on my mind, what with doing a lot of it right now and all.
