{"id":688,"date":"2010-03-15T13:06:37","date_gmt":"2010-03-15T17:06:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/15\/steroids-swimming-and-solar-power\/"},"modified":"2010-03-15T13:06:37","modified_gmt":"2010-03-15T17:06:37","slug":"steroids-swimming-and-solar-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/2010\/03\/15\/steroids-swimming-and-solar-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Steroids, Swimming and Solar Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have felt just chilled to the bone lately.\u00a0 No, it\u2019s not especially cold outside.\u00a0 In fact, it\u2019s a balmy 40F outside right now.\u00a0 It\u2019s the damp, and I know it.<\/p>\n<p>Damp, raw chill is probably my least favorite weather.\u00a0 Even the swimming pool felt really cold to me before I began my laps today, and they keep that pool pretty warm \u2013 usually around 75F.\u00a0 I usually stay pretty warm for several hours after a good workout, but not today.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m working snuggled under my slanket today with a rice-filled warmer at my feet and drinking a hot cup of tea.\u00a0\u00a0 Tea is more warming to me than coffee.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure why.<\/p>\n<p>I saw an interesting question the other day about swimming.\u00a0 \u201cWill swimming make my shoulders\u00a0 broad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interesting question.\u00a0 The real answer is that <strong>yes<\/strong> swimming will most certainly aid in shoulder development.\u00a0 Whether or not you find that desirable is your call.\u00a0 I will point out that you\u2019re not going to look like a member of the East German 1970s women\u2019s swim team without two things A) Steroids and B) Their training schedule.\u00a0 Good luck with that.\u00a0 Me? If I put in three miles of laps in a week, I\u2019m all good.<\/p>\n<p>Which, in this rambling post, brings up another point about steroid use.\u00a0 While not in favor of chemical performance enhancers, meeself, I sometimes think people have a rather unclear idea of how these things work.\u00a0 No-one takes steroids then sits on their butt playing video games and expects to win athletic contests.\u00a0 It\u2019s the drugs <em>and<\/em> incredibly grueling workouts that do it.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a magic pill (or shot).<\/p>\n<p>And in the interests of even more rambling, I\u2019m noticing I really do respond well to playing video games that feature bright, sunny weather with blue water and sand.\u00a0 I have not wanted to hibernate nearly as badly as I often do on gray, wet days when I spend my coffee break on <a href=\"http:\/\/nintendo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Wuhu_Island\">WuHu Island<\/a>.\u00a0 I think that surrounding myself with sunny, tropical images is probably a positive thing.\u00a0\u00a0 I sometimes wonder if Nanny constantly burning things on icky days was a similar thing.\u00a0 I think I get my solar-powered tendencies from her.\u00a0 We might love water, but it\u2019s the combination of water <em>and <\/em>sun that\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 The <em>only<\/em> time I\u2019d want to visit the far North or the far South would be sometime around the Summer solstice, I think.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m hoping for more sunshine than this spring.\u00a0 Last year\u2019s spring and summer were reminiscent of that Bradbury story \u201cAll Summer in a Day\u201d and I think another one like it will send me buggy.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of coffee breaks, mine is over and I need to get back to work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have felt just chilled to the bone lately.\u00a0 No, it\u2019s not especially cold outside.\u00a0 In fact, it\u2019s a balmy 40F outside right now.\u00a0 It\u2019s the damp, and I know it.
