{"id":664,"date":"2010-02-17T17:48:55","date_gmt":"2010-02-17T22:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/blog\/?p=664"},"modified":"2010-02-17T17:48:55","modified_gmt":"2010-02-17T22:48:55","slug":"yall-is-plural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/2010\/02\/17\/yall-is-plural\/","title":{"rendered":"Y&#039;all is Plural"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a Facebook group about the appropriate way to spell the contraction of &#8220;you all&#8221; so\u00a0prevalent\u00a0in the South.<\/p>\n<p>The expression is y&#8217;all. \u00a0Not ya&#8217;ll.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s more to it than that. \u00a0It&#8217;s also plural.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, yes, I bet some of you Yankees have seen a Southerner <em>appear<\/em> to address a single person with the expression &#8220;y&#8217;all&#8221;. \u00a0But, you really didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re waiting in line to pay your light bill, when someone in front of you is waving a receipt angrily and is saying, &#8220;Why did you turn of my lights? \u00a0I paid y&#8217;all last week!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0individual\u00a0in question is not addressing the singular person behind the counter, but the entire company as represented by the customer service representative. \u00a0 In this case, the organization is a collective group of people appropriately addressed as &#8220;you all&#8221; or &#8220;y&#8217;all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you are alone and are given the farewell, &#8220;Y&#8217;all come back now, y&#8217;hear?&#8221; you&#8217;re still not being addressed as &#8220;y&#8217;all&#8221; singularly. \u00a0You&#8217;re being addressed as a representative of a group of people (most likely your family) all if whom the speaker is expressing the wish to socialize with again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a Facebook group about the appropriate way to spell the contraction of &#8220;you all&#8221; so\u00a0prevalent\u00a0in the South.
