Why in hell do people flip out at a rumor that Facebook is going to start charging for its services?<\/p>\n
A)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Aint\u2019a gonna happen, my little chickadees.\u00a0 Facebook\u2019s business model is based on you <\/strong>donating time to market research playing Farmville, favoriting products for free advertising, and writing book reviews, \u2018kay?\u00a0 This is an order of magnitude cheaper than advertising on a sitcom and the audience is much<\/em> more specifically targeted. \u00a0As far as revenue? \u00a0I assure you they get more money off of advertising than they could out of charging you.<\/em><\/p>\n B)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Even if that weren\u2019t so, why does a company owe you<\/em> an expensive service that\u2019s a pain in the butt to maintain?<\/p>\n Do I mostly go for the free services? Yep. I use Pandora<\/a>, Facebook<\/a>, Twitter<\/a>, YouTube<\/a>, Yahoo<\/a>, Gmail<\/a>, Google Docs<\/a> and Wikipedia<\/a>.\u00a0 Shoot, several of the former I even use professionally!\u00a0 But there are services I pay for.\u00a0 My Livejournal account is a paid account, because I like the lack of advertising.\u00a0 My blogs are hosted on a server I pay for, ditto.<\/p>\n Are there a lot of free services offered on the Internet?\u00a0 Yeah, and a lot of them are pretty cool.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s a neat development that we can do so much for little money.\u00a0 If a service isn\u2019t worth me paying for, I don\u2019t.\u00a0 I have a free Pandora account because I don\u2019t find the ads that annoying, and I never have it playing for more than 40 hours in a month.<\/p>\n But it seems kind of silly to me for people to think that sysadmins and programmers are supposed to work for free or something so people can post about what they had for breakfast, ya know?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Okay, I\u2019ve got one for you.
