{"id":3169,"date":"2026-02-27T10:20:56","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T15:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/?p=3169"},"modified":"2026-02-27T10:20:59","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T15:20:59","slug":"what-did-you-do-all-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/2026\/02\/27\/what-did-you-do-all-day\/","title":{"rendered":"What Did You Do All Day?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some years ago, I had gotten a part time job.&nbsp; I\u2019d commented to my husband that I could be a full-time homemaker or I could have a job and do some homemaking stuff, but not <em>all<\/em> of it on my day off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I had written a notebook that outlined chores and routines and what was needed quite clearly, the transition to making sure Stuff Got Done was easy \u2013 especially because we also decided that we\u2019d own the document together and discuss changes as Life Changes happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All well and good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, as I was bringing home groceries, my husband was looking at the notebook to see what detail cleaning stuff was scheduled for the week.&nbsp; I realized something:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Many parts of the detail cleaning had become invisible to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not out of malice, not out of laziness, but because he works from home and I don\u2019t, he was doing a lot of these things on breaks or while thinking out a problem.&nbsp; I had not once looked at the schedule for this week. If I <em>had<\/em>, I would have noticed something else \u2013 I needed to wipe down the fridge <em>before <\/em>I got the groceries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m proud of myself for not asking why in hell my <em>husband<\/em> hadn\u2019t wiped down the fridge before grocery time. I also admit that a few years ago, if I\u2019d kept my mouth shut, it would have been a narrow miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I say this to point out how <em>easy<\/em> it is for work you don\u2019t currently do or keep track if can become invisible.&nbsp; It can Just Happen and you don\u2019t think much about it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The takeaway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for structural work being done. &nbsp;Do you walk into an office and only think about the cleaners when something is missed?&nbsp; Do you only notice a bridge when construction work makes you late?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not saying this to accuse.&nbsp; It\u2019s perfectly natural to fall into the habit of seamless things not being noticed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I am saying is:&nbsp; Try to make a practice of <strong>noticing<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my house?&nbsp; The kitchen counters are regularly clean and the dish drainer never has anything gungy and no, I wasn\u2019t <em>thinking<\/em> about it.&nbsp; That\u2019s just the way the kitchen looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it looked that way because my husband was following a cleaning schedule I\u2019d initially written five years ago and\u2026 I forgot it.&nbsp; Because I wasn\u2019t the one <strong>doing<\/strong> it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What in your life Just Happens?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some years ago, I had gotten a part time job.&nbsp; I\u2019d commented to my husband that I could be a full-time homemaker or I could have a job and do some homemaking stuff, but not all of it on my day off.
