Alabama ICUs are being overrun as Covid-19 tears through the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know I appear to be on the liberal end of the spectrum.  I\u2019m not by any sane standard.  I am merely not right-wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to someone whose thinking is even more binary than mine (and that\u2019s quite a feat), I oughta be punching the air and saying, \u201cHey, there, dummies!  I TOLD you so!  Didn\u2019t I tell you so?  This is what you GET when you\u2019re STUPID.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t feel that way about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I feel sorry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am frustrated at the needless suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No-one wants to do the tedious, boring, endless grind of work that is required to make this better.  It\u2019s not as exciting as being Captain America bulleting through a factory to save a friend.  It\u2019s not as inspiring as Patrick Swayze fighting for freedom with a pack of hot-looking teenager. (Sorry about the current gut, Jed.  I\u2019m there with ya! Getting\u2019 old sucks.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the sort of challenge that America isn\u2019t really very good at, and it\u2019s kind of embarrassing.  We\u2019re great a short-term extraordinary effort.  We really are, and it\u2019s awesome.  I\u2019m glad of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where we\u2019re falling down, and fellow Americans this is getting embarrassing, is at the patient, undramatic work required to build or fix the really big<\/strong> problems, or (when possible) engineer them out of existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re acting like adolescents with our first car and our first beer shouting, \u201cYou can\u2019t tell me what to do!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need to learn to tell ourselves it\u2019s bedtime, friends.  If we don\u2019t, we\u2019re going to have other nations having a meeting to decide what to do with us, because a virus doesn\u2019t stay within national borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
