{"id":211,"date":"2008-10-08T09:56:07","date_gmt":"2008-10-08T13:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/blog\/?p=211"},"modified":"2008-10-08T09:56:07","modified_gmt":"2008-10-08T13:56:07","slug":"doing-what-you-can","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/2008\/10\/08\/doing-what-you-can\/","title":{"rendered":"Doing What You Can"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today was just a bad workout day.\u00a0 I slept in and had to talk myself into going to the gym.\u00a0 Okay, I did <em>go<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 But I was tired and weak, and in pain.<\/p>\n<p>I think Fall is hell on a lot of people with chronic pain issues.\u00a0 My knee was really hurting yesterday.\u00a0 I thought I wasn&#8217;t going to be able to do my clean and presses without hurting it, so I was surprised to find that it seemed to make my knee feel better.\u00a0 Weird, but I&#8217;ll take that.<\/p>\n<p>However, I seem to have overchallenged my left shoulder.\u00a0 Ouch, ouch, ouch.\u00a0 Hadda remove some plates and do the sets for fewer reps.\u00a0 I hate doing that, but Rule One<sup>1<\/sup> and all.\u00a0 Injuring yourself so you&#8217;re sidelined from an excess of macho isn&#8217;t actually cool.\u00a0 Just means you broke Rule One.<\/p>\n<p>This is where doing what you can is important.\u00a0 Sure, sure, unless you&#8217;re paralyzed you can do <em>something<\/em>.\u00a0 And yes, you should be doing <em>something<\/em>.\u00a0 But no-one but you can judge what that something is.\u00a0 I remember when I had my ACL repair,\u00a0 I fretted a lot until I could get back in the pool.\u00a0 My PT told me that while it was great I wanted to get back to swimming and I was lucky it would be soon, what I really <em>needed<\/em> was to focus on activating the muscles in the leg that&#8217;d been sliced open with a knife so that they&#8217;d <em>work<\/em> again.\u00a0\u00a0 While it didn&#8217;t feel as cool as the workouts I was doing, it was indeed exercise, necessary exercise and it was what I <em>could<\/em> do.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, I find stuff I know is gonna heal a lot easier to cope with.\u00a0 I knew I was going to get off the crutches.\u00a0 The arthritis stays, dammit.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes doing what you <em>can<\/em> feels discouraging, especially when &#8220;can&#8221; changes from day to day.\u00a0 You might feel like you&#8217;re making crap for progress.\u00a0 You might question whether or not you&#8217;re slacking or looking for excuses.
