In Glory Road, Heinlein has a character who can\u2019t go to sleep and he asks for something to read.\u00a0 \u201cWords in a row\u201d is the way he put it.\u00a0 I remember that really resonating with me, as I have had a similar habit since even before I got into science fiction.[1]<\/a><\/p>\n

So, I\u2019m a pretty voracious reader.\u00a0 When I started carrying a purse regularly, purse shopping took on some serious specifics. It had to be large enough to fit a couple of paperbacks.\u00a0 Even so I had to leave some of my favorite epics at home whenever I travelled.[2]<\/a>\u00a0 I disliked that.<\/p>\n

When e-readers became popular, I cheered.\u00a0 Most of my favorite books really are words in a row.\u00a0 Not too many diagrams or illustrations needed to supplement the text[3]<\/a> and formatting page by page wasn\u2019t a real issue.\u00a0 It was the text<\/em> that was the important thing.<\/p>\n

So, I\u2019m a big fan of e-readers.\u00a0 I get a little frisson<\/em> of delight when I slip my Kindle into my purse with its library of hundreds of books to choose from.\u00a0 I like it even better when I am reading long computer manuals on travel and don\u2019t have to carry those brick-like things with me and crowd out my fiction weight!<\/p>\n

Does that mean I hate \u201cdead tree\u201d books?<\/p>\n

Not in the least.\u00a0 My copy of The Lord of the Rings<\/em> in its red leather binding is a treasure to me.\u00a0 I love the marriage of the art of the book craft as well as the story.\u00a0 A book on origami or knitting is pointless on a Kindle.\u00a0 The color illustrations that are large enough to see and understand are integral to the usefulness and beauty of the book.[4]<\/a><\/p>\n

But when it\u2019s words in a row<\/em> that make the story and make the art<\/em>, my oh my do I love my e-reader.<\/p>\n
