{"id":958,"date":"2011-06-02T09:24:29","date_gmt":"2011-06-02T13:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/blog\/?page_id=958"},"modified":"2011-06-02T09:24:29","modified_gmt":"2011-06-02T13:24:29","slug":"tools-youll-need","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/pattern-drafting-down-and-dirty\/tools-youll-need\/","title":{"rendered":"Tools You&#039;ll Need"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>Large   sheets of paper &#8212; I like wide paper that comes in a large roll, such as   butcher paper.<\/li>\n<li>Pencil   and good eraser &#8212; God, I love being married to an artist.\u00a0 You have no   idea how often I swipe his supplies.\u00a0 Revenge for the time he used my   fabric scissors to cut (shudder) cardboard.<\/li>\n<li>Flexible   ruler\u00a0 &#8212; any arts and craft sort carries them.\u00a0 There is also a   curved ruler that many fabric stores sell that is specifically designed to   help in the redrafting of necklines and armscyes. \u00a0 I often use it.<\/li>\n<li>Yardstick   or long T-square &#8212;\u00a0 I prefer the T-square because I cannot eyeball a   square corner well.<\/li>\n<li>Calculator\u00a0   &#8212; unless you were luckier than I and were not forced to endure a public <em>soi-disent <\/em>education.\u00a0 You will have to do some calculations, but don&#8217;t be   scared.\u00a0 The math isn&#8217;t any harder than anything you already do if you   sew. \u00a0 However, if you&#8217;re feeling really lazy, you can download this <a href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/BlankSloper.xls\">Blank Sloper spreadsheet <\/a>(Excel), which is compatible back to Excel 2003, and just enter your measurements and let the file do the calculations (I actually keep this spreadsheet with my family&#8217;s measurements on it and use that rather than calculate each time). \u00a0It should also be compatible with Google Docs and Open Office, if you&#8217;re using any of those spreadsheet solutions.<\/li>\n<li>Measuring   tape<\/li>\n<li>Fabric   &#8212; When making a garment, the amount of fabric you buy does depend a bit on   how large you are. \u00a0 I am about a size 22 and if I am using 45&#8243; or   60&#8243; fabric, I need two times the entire front length plus one sleeve   length, plus the amount I add for hem for the garment. \u00a0 If you are very   small (less than a size 8) you will only need twice the entire front length   plus the hems. \u00a0 If you have a bust, waist or hip measurement of more   than 90 inches, you will need to make sure that you only buy 60&#8243; fabric.<\/li>\n<li>Your   measurement chart\u00a0 (You <em>did <\/em>get a friend to take the <a title=\"Measurements\" href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/pattern-drafting-down-and-dirty\/measurements\/\">measurements <\/a>for you, <strong><em>right <\/em><\/strong>?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, we are really, really going to start drafting (drum roll please)   the\u00a0 <a title=\"Salwar Kameez Front: Step One\" href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/pattern-drafting-down-and-dirty\/salwar-kameez-front-step-one\/\">front torso<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Large sheets of paper &#8212; I like wide paper that comes in a large roll, such as butcher paper.
