{"id":1075,"date":"2011-07-06T13:38:20","date_gmt":"2011-07-06T17:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/blog\/?page_id=1075"},"modified":"2020-03-19T07:32:53","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T11:32:53","slug":"depression-coping-tools","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/depression-coping-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"Depression Coping Tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was in a rather intensive Cognitive Behavior Therapy program some years ago after a very bad crash.<\/p>\n<p>These are some tools\/worksheets I&#8217;ve found useful in coping with life and depression in general.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very much aimed at finding solutions to things you can and learning to let go of things you genuinely cannot help.\u00a0 For instance, if the situation involves another person&#8217;s behavior, you really cannot control that.\u00a0 I used to think writing this stuff out was goofy and hokey.\u00a0 After all, I can organize things in my brain very well, thank you very much.\u00a0 While that is true, writing it out in an organized fashion actually does get it out of your brain and more onto paper, leaving you able to work through things with a lot less stress and feeling of being overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Worry List\" href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/depression-coping-tools\/worry-list\/\">The Worry List<\/a>\u00a0 &#8212; This tool is just a brainstorm.\u00a0 You list everything you&#8217;re worried about &#8212; small things, large things, goofy shit, whatever you&#8217;re worried about.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Worry Stopper\" href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/depression-coping-tools\/the-worry-stopper\/\">The Worry Stopper<\/a>\u00a0 &#8212; This builds on the worry list.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s a grid broken into four sections: things you can control that are important to you, things you cannot control that are important to you, things you can control that are not important to you, and things you cannot control that are not important to you.\u00a0 At the bottom of the page is a place for you to write down how you feel about it, and any observations you have.\u00a0 It also helps you see clearly the things you can work on.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Identifying Needs\" href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/depression-coping-tools\/identifying-needs\/\">Identifying Needs<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; This is a tool that lists dozens of things you might want\/need more of in your life. Go through it and circle everything you need more of in your life.\u00a0 Then pick the three you think you need most.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Steps to Meet Your Needs\" href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/depression-coping-tools\/steps-to-meet-your-needs\/\">Steps to Meet Your Needs<\/a>\u00a0 &#8212; This builds on the Identifying Needs worksheet.\u00a0 You go through it, prioritize your needs, make a plan to meet them, and so on.\u00a0 I really like this tool.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Four Column Tool\" href=\"http:\/\/noelfigart.com\/wordpress\/depression-coping-tools\/four-column-tool\/\">The Four Column Tool<\/a>\u00a0 &#8212; This is my favorite tool and I use it all the time.\u00a0 If something has made me upset, I go through and identify the situation, list everything I was thinking about it, then list my feelings in relationship to it, and see if any of it is caused by one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/caps\/self-help\/stress-management\/distorted-thinking\/\">Fifteen Styles of Distorted Thinking<\/a>\u00a0 and see if I can actually turn it around into something that is not distorted.\u00a0 This tool has kept me from spinning out of control more than once.<\/p>\n<p>For me, these tools work best if I try to do them when I am only mildly annoyed\/unhappy\/uncomfortable to KEEP me from spiraling.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lot harder for these to work when I actually AM, though I do try to do them whenever I catch myself, even if it&#8217;s in a bad place.\u00a0 Again, for me, it works best when I keep up the habit if actually USING at least one of\u00a0them daily, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was in a rather intensive Cognitive Behavior Therapy program some years ago after a very bad crash.
